After living in Kansas for most my life, I now call Missouri my home -- and have done so for 18 months.
I'm only 40 miles removed from where I grew up. So you wouldn't think there would be much difference between the two areas, right? Wrong.
I can't speak for the entire states, but I've noticed sever differences between the two. I consider some to be bigger than others, and listed below are five of the biggest:
1. Speed Limits
Why is it that I'll be crossing the state line on a road that looks EXACTLY THE SAME, yet, for no apparent reason, the speed limit decreased by 10 mph??? When you cross into Missouri, that's exactly what happens.
Advantage: KANSAS
2. Taxes
I won't get into specifics here (because I don't understand them), but the numbers speak for themselves. Taxes don't have the effect they used to, and that's a very good thing.
Advantage: MISSOURI
3. Smoking Laws
When it's worth it to drive 30 minutes each way to a smaller bowling alley in a smaller town, you know there's a problem. Catch up with the times, Missouri. What is this? 1973?
Advantage: KANSAS
4. Outdoors
The terrain in SW Missouri is not much different than SE Kansas. But there's something about being at the very edge of the Ozarks that's peaceful and serene. A short drive is all it takes.
Advantage: MISSOURI
5. Gas Prices
A difference of ten, fifteen, or sometimes even twenty cents per gallon adds up extremely fast when you drive as much as I do. Missouri has some of the lowest gas prices in the nation.
Advantage: MISSOURI
I could have found other things to harp on, but these are the bigger ones for me. So by my count, it appears as if Missouri wins this battle. They'll be talking about this victory for years to come.
