The LOST Super Bowl

It's Super Bowl week. That means ESPN will beat us over the head with overly repetitive analysis. By the end of the week, we'll know everything about each and every player on both the Giants and Patriots. If someone has an irregular bowel movement, it will become Breaking News.

But with all that being said, I love the Super Bowl. It's not my favorite event of the year, but it's the most unique in that it's a reason to party regardless of who's playing. My days of watching go all the way back to when my Bills were losing four straight...

I've seen them all except for one. So what happened with that one???

It was 2009, and I was working irregular hours at Target in Springfield, MO. I was scheduled to work the night of the Super Bowl, and naturally I could not find a replacement. Furthermore, I had a job interview scheduled for 8:00 the next morning in Wichita! I knew it would be one crazy night.

Santonio Holmes made the game-winning
catch late in the Super Bowl XLIII. But I
didn't see it until several hours later.
This was the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. During the first half, I think I went into the break room about 17 times to check the score. I finally convinced my manager to let me off a little early because I had to drive five hours immediately after my shift. So around halftime, I jumped in my car and took off towards Wichita.

Because of my situation, I couldn't stop somewhere and watch the game. I already wasn't going to get much sleep the way it was. Therefore, my only resource was AM radio. I had to change stations about every 20 minutes because I kept losing the signal, but fortunately, several stations were broadcasting the game.

Some of you may remember that the game wound up being a great one, with the Steelers pulling out a victory in the final minutes. But I didn't see a single highlight from the 2nd half until about 2:00 am. For a huge sports fan like me, it was brutal. But it has made me appreciate every Super Bowl since that much more.
