It's not that I'm scared of being scared. I just simply think most of them are unwatchable. They either rely too much on gore, or the screenplay simply sucks.
Fortunately, the long-standing curse of awfulness ended earlier this month when I finally had the opportunity to watch A Quiet Place.
1 - The Concept
If they hear you, they hunt you. It's a premise that's so simple yet executed to such perfection. The result is a movie-watching experience unlike anything I've ever witnessed.
2 - The Writing
The movie is a brisk 90 minutes and does not waste time with unnecessary introductions. It starts and you're immediately thrust into plot. I love it when movies allow you to piece together the past by yourself.
3 - John Krasinski and Emily Blunt
I've long had a mancrush on Krasinski from his sitcom days. This movie has his footprint all over it: directing, writing, and acting. He's terrific. But his co-star and real-life wife may have acted even better in this. That's saying a LOT.
It's rare for movies to that are released in the spring to receive much love from the Academy Awards, but I'm really hoping this gets the credit it deserves.
