So Long, Garden City

Dear Garden City,

It's hard to believe our time together has come to an end. When I moved here in early 2009, it wasn't for my love of wind and agriculture. Rather, it was for a job.

Having lived in Kansas nearly my whole life, I didn't think you would be that much different than Pittsburg. But I soon realized that 370 miles can make a BIG difference.

I came to you alone, away from everyone and everything I had ever known. Those beginning days were a struggle. I basically worked alone and didn't put myself out there to meet many people. It's safe to say my social life hit rock bottom.

Then I got a dog. That certainly helped.

Then I got married. That REALLY helped.

You provided the first home that my wife and I ever shared together. We always thought our time with you would be brief, but instead of twiddling our thumbs, we decided to make the most of it. We found a church, made some great friends, and became involved in your community.

Over the next two years, you began to grow on me. I even made a list of your best characteristics. I felt pride whenever someone mentioned your name.

But alas, here we are. You and I both know it's time to move on. You have been very good to us, and I hope that we have been good to you. Maybe our paths will cross again in the future, and we can take a little trip down memory lane.

So long, Garden City. I won't forget you.

Yours truly,
Rye
