What's the Greatest TV Season Ever?

One of the many reasons I consider Fall to be the best of the four seasons is because most television series are starting their new seasons, including many this week. So I posed the question to myself, "What's the greatest TV season ever?"

I've always been a bigger fan of TV comedies, as opposed to dramas. There have been exceptions. I loved the early years of CSI, and I watched every episode of Lost on the edge of my sofa. But for the most part, I want a show that makes me laugh.

The three that have provided me with more entertainment than any others are (in the order of their debut):

Friends - A joy to watch all the way through, but the first four seasons were by far the best. Once Chandler and Monica got together, the show lost a little bit of it's luster.

The Office - It's getting ready to start it's 8th season... the first without Michael Scott. I'm on record expressing my doubts, but I'll still watch eagerly each week. Seasons 2 and 3 were my favorites.

Modern Family - A relatively new show that is prepping for it's third season. I'm convinced it's impossible to make a bad episode. This show is in it's prime, and I can't wait to see what's in store this season.

With that said, my favorite single season of all-time comes from none of these comedies. Rather, it comes from a show I didn't even like until I was in college. But once I was old enough to understand it, I finally realized what I had been missing. In my opinion, the greatest TV season ever is...

Seinfeld, Season 4

It didn't take long for Seinfeld to earn the reputation as "the show about nothing." So in Season 4, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld decided to take it to a whole new level... by creating a story arc where Jerry and George would write a sitcom that parodied the actual television series. GENIUS! What transpired in the third episode, "The Pitch", is one of the funniest scenes I've ever watched:

This story arc pops up in various episodes throughout the season, and when it does, it's comedy gold. Throw in the typical nothingness and classic episodes such as "The Contest" and "The Outing", and pound-for-pound, I think it's the best ever.

What say you? What do you consider to be the best TV season ever?
