Last week my son, Dempsey, turned two months old. That's sixty-plus days worth of fatherhood I now have in my back pocket. So yeah, I'm pretty much an expert now...
In all seriousness though, I've tried writing two different blog posts since Dempsey was born, but neither one materialized, and thus, they were deleted and never seen by a soul.
The problem, I believe, is that I simply am not knowledgeable to write about one particular subject. Or perhaps I don't have the desire to write about one particular subject. Or the patience. Or the focus. Or the... You get the idea.
However, I think I finally have something worth sharing here. Listed below are 33 random thoughts I have as a new father. There is no organization to them whatsoever, just some one-liners that have popped into my head at one point or another.
These are not meant to make a statement. They are not meant to start a debate. These are are exactly what the subject says they are: random thoughts.
1. I love this little guy a lot.
2. It took me a couple weeks before the love became "unconditional."
3. My first thought when seeing him: "That just came out of her."
4. I never really had any desire to cry when he was born. Honestly, I was more shocked and surprised than anything. They were not the feelings I expected.
5. Changing diapers really aren't that bad. It's better than cleaning the litter box.
6. I have taken on the job of "bath-giver". I actually really like it. It's sorta become my own personal bonding-time with him.
7. Breasts have a whole new meaning to me than they used to.
8. Speaking of which, I'm SO GLAD I don't have that job.
9. What's my least favorite parenting thing to do?... Giving Dempsey the bottle. It's been a nightmare at times.
10. I miss sleeping through the night.
11. I miss being able to watch a TV show without getting interrupted.
12. I love taking Dempsey on walks around our neighborhood (when it's not freezing.)
13, I've never been a snuggler (ask my wife), but I like it when Dempsey will try snuggling up to my chest.
14. Something I'm really looking forward to... Dempsey having more head control.
15. I jokingly tell people that I'm training Dempsey to walk by the time he's eight months. I'm a little serious. ;-)
16. People have told me that Dempsey will only be this small once... I consider that to be a good thing. I personally can't wait for Dempsey to get older/bigger.
17. That doesn't mean I won't cherish these moments... I'll just probably cherish others more.
18. I love baby clothes, which was very surprising to me. My wife went shopping for him last week and I was legitimately excited to see what she got.
19. Two things I can't wait to do with Dempsey once he's older... The first is to play catch with him.
20. The second is to cook with him in the kitchen and teach him about food.
21. I do not want to use Dempsey as a "go-to excuse" to avoid doing things.
22. All I really want for Dempsey is for him to be happy and healthy.
23. I once got really excited when changing Dempsey's diaper because I thought there was a Ninja Turtle on there. As it turns it, it was only Oscar the Grouch.
24. It's very important to me that my wife and I do things together without Dempsey like date nights and weekends away.
25. I'm thankful to have parents who will gladly watch him when those moments happen.
26. Sometimes my wife will talk about Dempsey a little too much for my personal taste
27. There's a right way, and there's a wrong way to tell her that. I've done both...
28. I'm SO happy that he gets to grow up with a dog!
29. I'm incredibly thankful that I married a wonderful woman with a heart of gold, who is an OUTSTANDING mother.
30. I'm okay that Dempsey looks 80% like his mother. I think she's good-looking, which bodes well for him in the future.
31. It's clear that my wife and I have two completely different parenting styles.
32. It's almost like going through the beginning stages of marriage all over again... without all the sex.
33. Dempsey is making me a better person every day.
