Now that Between the Ears is up and running again, I could write multiple posts about things that happened over that period. However, I'm only going to write about one. It was a moment that will stick with me for the rest of my life
In late July, I said good-bye to Grandma Moses forever...
For anyone who may be confused right now, please allow me go give you a brief history lesson:
I consider Grandma Moses to be the first car I ever truly owned. She was a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. She was gift from my grandparents -- given to me for my 18th birthday, just a few months prior to graduating high school.
Flash forward more than eight years later when I handed the title and keys to the owner of a salvage yard in Southwest Missouri -- yes, a salvage yard.
I won't disclose how much money I sold Grandma Moses for, but let's just say -- had he given me two nickels, I would have considered myself a winner in the deal. I'm convinced I milked every last ounce of value out of that old hag. In fact, when I pulled into the parking lot and got out of the driver's seat for the very last time, smoke was literally pouring from the engine. And to think... that had nothing to do with the transmission being shot or any of the other 20-some odd things wrong with her.
But all kidding aside, Grandma Moses was a great car. Her time had simply come to an end. I'm blessed to have had her as my first real car. She took me from Oswego to Pittsburg. From Pittsburg to Springfield. From Springfield to Garden City. And finally from Garden City to SW Missouri.
She's taken road trips from Denver to Nashville. And from Lincoln to Dallas. And although she had her lion's share of mechanical problems (especially in her geriatric age), she NEVER broke down at those critical moments. So despite some of my remarks, she was a very good car and one that I'll always think of fondly.
Here's to you, Grandma Moses... Thanks for getting me as far as you did.

I'll never forget all those trips to Buffalo Run. RIP, Grandma.
ReplyDeleteI was also thinking about Buffalo Run, the one time I went with you all. Great post and tribute to a fine vehicle.
